Kindness / A simple act reminds us of the goodness in humanity

John Burden was recently travelling home from Cairns when his engine seized. He called RACQ for roadside assistance. Twenty minutes later, another ute pulled up in front of John, and the driver waved down a passing motorcyclist to help him move John’s ute safely off the road.

The motorcyclist headed off knowing the situation was now safe, and being taken care of. The ute driver checked on John’s welfare, as it was hot and sunny, and headed off to get some water for him. He returned a few minutes later with ice-cold water, and a hot container, “here we are mate, chicken teriyaki”.

John describes himself as speechless, and reached for his wallet. His kind Samaritan wouldn’t hear a word of it, “That’s all right mate. We’re having real bad times. so we’ve got to be good to each other, eh?”

He waved goodbye, and John didn’t get his name.

“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most under-rated agent of human change.”
