The team at Zinc Port Douglas have been rewarded for their exceptional efforts in an extraordinary year. Last night they were announced as the winner of the Best Contemporary Australian Restaurant in Queensland and the Northern Territory at last night’s Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Association Awards.

Zinc joined fellow local venues Salsa Bar & Grill, Melaleuca and Nautilus, for the esteemed Best Contemporary Australian-Informal restaurant award nominations. The Award is sponsored by American Express, and other nominees include JAM Restaurant in South Townsville and The Waterline Restaurant at Keppel Bay Marina in Rosslyn Bay.

The Awards for Excellence gives restaurants, cafes and caterers recognition for their hard work, exceptional food and outstanding service in the vibrant hospitality industry. Awards are held in each State, recognising operators in metropolitan and regional centres. The R&CA awards are the only industry awards with an independent judging system with over 280 judges reporting to state Judge Chairs and a National Chief Judge.
Zinc owner Chris Bower, head chef Adam Wech, and sous chef Francesco travelled to Brisbane for the presentation, a glamorous sit-down black tie gala dinner held at Victoria Park Function Centre. Chris describes receiving the award as fitting recognition of the resilience and commitment of his full team, and family, in what has been a clearly challenging year.

Zinc worked right through COVID-19, pivoting their business practice to include takeaway and delivery options throughout the lockdown. Despite the challenges of 2020, Zinc will close the year on a high note. Last week’s KIND Melbourne Cup gala lunch was highly successful, kicking off a festive season that is already looking to be heavily booked over the Christmas-New Year period.
“We are tremendously lucky to have so many absolute gems in the hospitality sector spanning the width and breadth of the sunshine state. After suffering so much this year, it is incredible to be able to bring the industry together for such an iconic night”
R&CA CEO Wes Lambert
