Mosaic for Mossman Community Art Project Gets Underway

DOUGLAS Arts Base (DAB) is hosting a ceramic leaf and insect decorating mosaics workshop this weekend, Saturday 27 February from 9am until midday.

Samantha Matthews is facilitating “Making Mosaics for Mossman” as a successful grant recipients in this year’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a Queensland Government and Local Government partnership to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. Councillor Abigail Noli, who is Chairwoman of the local RADF Committee, said there was a great balance to be found in the successful projects.

“There is a real array of incredible ideas and projects that will benefit artists and the greater Douglas communities,” she said.

“When I speak to the community, people regularly request more public artwork and fortuitously, this year sees substantial funding go towards public art projects.”

Council supported the RADF committee’s recommendations to fund 13 of 16 submissions received, ranging from Retrospective Exhibitions and murals to community workshops and emerging artist development projects.

Tutor Sam “Moo” Matthews will guide participants through the free workshop, supplying required tools and materials. Sam is a long-term DAB member who has been recently recognised for her outstanding commitment by being awarded DAB’s highest honour, the Peter Culley Award. This award honours the memory of Peter Culley, a passionate and beloved founding tutor at DAB who died in 2012.

Participants in Sam’s workshop will create decorated mosaic leaves and insects. These will be included in the Making Mosaics For Mossman Community Art Project that aims to enliven the main street of Mossman, Front Street. Tropical insect-themed mosaics will be installed onto existing planter boxes along the street.

A second mosaic workshop is also underway at DAB, creating the mosaic panels for the garden beds. If you are interested in participating, you are welcome to join in, on Saturday afternoons between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

The workshops are free.

There is no need to book, all materials and tools are provided, and no experience is necessary.
