What’s On Around The Douglas Shire This Easter Weekend?

EASTER weekend is now looking much more promising for the expected crowds to descend upon live music venues, restaurants, cafes, campgrounds, hotel pools and market stalls. This weekend, there is a wonderful selection of festive and family events and experiences to choose from throughout the Shire and beyond!

Hotels, bottle shops and large supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths will be closed for Good Friday but there are many smaller restaurants and cafes who will be open. Night Owl in the Portico Building on Macrossan St will be open, as will IGA (from 8am-6pm). Traditional Easter religious services will be held in Mossman and Port Douglas across the weekend.

Music comes alive throughout the Port Douglas venues on Saturday, with Cairns group Front Ear featuring at the Court House Hotel, Cameron Cusack at the Central, SeaChange at Hemingways and all day and all night pool and beach vibes down at Turtle Cove. There’s live Rock ‘n Roll up at Lions Den for a full weekend of great local entertainment.

Dress up and Giddy up at Mareeba Races on Saturday, with live music and rides for the kids.

Markets return to the pontoon at St Crispins Cafe this weekend too-always a great venue for breakfast and lunch!

On Easter Sunday, take the kids along to the Coles Shopping Centre for Bodies in Motions’ Hip Hop Bunny performance, with chocolately surprises for the kids!

UPDATE 6.20 pm 31/3/2021 / Note that this event has now been cancelled due to COVIDsafe requirements.

Wear them out with a visit to the Port Douglas markets, pop in to the historical Court House Museum for a trip down memory lane, and a walk around Flagstaff Hill before indulging in one of our fabulous local Sunday dining specials-including seafood specials, Sunday roasts and $1 oysters.

There are also markets in Tolga, if you want to explore the region further (drop in to the Mount Molloy National Hotel on the way up, for the best burgers and beers!).

Palm Cove will also host Sunday markets along the Esplanade, so if the wind drops, this makes for a lovely stroll along the beachfront, followed by $1 oysters at 1:00 pm sharp on the way home at Ellis Beach Bar & Grill, with live tunes to accompany.

If you are looking to head north over the Daintree, Sunday a is a great day for it, with the return of Safari Sundays to the Turtle Rock cafe, featuring live blues and drink and food specials for a decadent Sunday session…

Art fans will enjoy the weekend in Cairns with the Archibald Prize exhibition continuing, as well as local artists featuring in the Call of the Running Tide Exhibition at Northsite Contemporary Gallery.

Prestigious and controversial, The Archibald Prize is Australia’s oldest and most respected award for portraiture, and it arrived in Cairns this week. The Exhibition is open through to 2 May 2021. Reservations are essential.

Weather Situation

A high [1027 hPa] moving slowly eastwards across southeastern Australia extends a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A trough will slowly deepen well east of the coast over the central Coral Sea in the next few days. The combination of these features will maintain fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the tropical east coast.
