The well-loved Wonderland Spiegeltent returns to the tropics for a celebration of circus, cabaret and sizzling burlesque.
Wonderland Spiegeltent, the beautiful 1930s nostalgic wooden mirrored travelling European circus tent, is coming back to Port Douglas Carnivale, with opening night next Friday May 14. For 10 days over Carnivale 2021, step inside the bevelled doors of the Wonderland Spiegeltent as they bring their spectacular program of live entertainment including circus, cabaret, comedy, burlesque, music and family shows.
From seductive sword-swallowers and punk rock knife-throwers to topless tap-dancers and eye-watering contortionists all hosted by an MC believed to be the evil love child of Liza Minelli and Jim Carey, the Wonderland Spiegeltent’s headline show, Popcorn Underground, is a rainbow show of diversity and glamour guaranteed to leave audiences breathless as the performers twirl their way through sex, skill and slapstick. Popcorn Underground, named after the Belgian dance party subculture, promises scintillating sexiness that will take audiences to a grittier place than they’ve ever been before.
The original bad-ass frontman of Australian rock and roll Tex Perkins will team up with Matt Walker as they grace the stage for a one-night-only intimate show, and Blunderland, the genuine New York variety show promises a trip down a rabbit hole of scintillating surprises audiences won’t soon forget. Award-winning family show The Greatest Magic Show is one for the kids, and here in Queensland for the very first time.
Located on the Port Douglas foreshore at Dixie Park, the Wonderland Spiegeltent Festival Hub will be a central arts and entertainment hub, featuring live performances, a licensed Garden bar, craft beers, delicious wines, sweet treats and food trucks ready to party in paradise. The original bad-ass frontman of Australian rock and roll, Tex Perkins has a celebrated history. A man whose career has taken him from experimental punktronica through to the dizzying heights of multiple ARIA awards and recognition with The Cruel Sea, he is now joined by Matt Walker, an equally celebrated blues musician. Matt has written, recorded and performed with a diverse range of artists which include Mick Harvey, Rob Hirst and Jim Mogine (both from Midnight Oil), Archie Roach, and many others. Now in an exclusive, intimate performance in North Queensland, Tex and Matt get their swamp blues groove on, a little reminiscent of the old days whilst fleshing out some new tunes. Not to be missed.
