What’s On Around the Douglas Shire This Weekend?

We celebrate mums on Sunday with Mother’s Day and there are plenty of options for spending time with your mum, or indulging her solo!

There are a few key events on all weekend including Cairns Expo, the Northern Nats and Herberton’s Pioneer Weekend Country & Music Festival.

Sporting fixtures include the Port Douglas Croc’s Pink in the Tropics Day-kicking off with the Pink Breakfast-this is a great day of community AFL and Sign Up for the Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday.

There are markets in Mossman, St Crispins, Port Douglas, and farther afield in Mareeba and Holloways Beach.

Cane toads are back and racing at their new home as of next Tuesday, Chilly’s Pizza & Trattoria, from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 5pm-great family entertainment!

One of our very best local favourites, Crossroads Cafe, will be showcasing the finest local musical talent with Open Mic tonight from 6pm along with great local fish and chips and ever entertaining company, while up the hill at Mount Molloy Shannon will be keeping the dance floor kickin’ and stompin’ as the Jackpot Joker soars to $2050.

Down in the big smoke, Tones & I will be rocking Munro Martin Park tomorrow, warming up FNQ for the Red Hot Summer Tour next weekend.

ALL WEEKEND

CAIRNS EXPO

The Cairns Expo is far North Queensland’s largest outdoor adventure and home and lifestyle event.

Over three huge days, the Cairns Showgrounds will be filled with the latest caravans, camper trailers, vehicles and 4×4 accessories, holiday destinations, boating, fishing gear and more, PLUS great ideas for your home and lifestyle such as sustainable living ideas, sheds, roofing, pools, homeware, bedding and more.

There is plenty to see and do across the weekend, including great entertainment for the whole family.

The weather doesn’t look too bad-get out there and enjoy three days of exploring and enjoying!

NORTHERN NATS

Whether you can pull this off as a weekend event mum would love to participate in is entirely up to each family, but the Northern Nats are on all weekend, three days of tyre torture, burnouts, drags and powerskids at Springmount Raceway, Mareeba.

HERBERTON Pioneer Weekend Country & Folk Music Festival

Steampunk, vintage fashion and old school arts and trades such as blacksmithing, woodchopping and tin panning-take a step back in time at Herberton Historic Village.

Talented crowd pleasers the Littmus Steampunk Band will be spreading the word about the joys of steam-powered machines, while a fully restored 1905 Marshall Steam Traction Engine will be fired up for a rattling demonstration of these early mechanical wonders.

The entertaining Littmus Steampunk Band describe themselves as a “ragtag bunch of time travellers from the great Victorian Age of exploration and invention”.

Historic Village Herberton owners Craig and Connie Kimberley said the annual Pioneer Weekend really brought the old mining village to life, especially with so many guests dressing up in period costume for the event.

“We hope to see old friends and new at this year’s Pioneer Weekend, the first since 2019,” Craig said.

The two-day program also features performances by Whiskey Boat, Now & Never, Dave Kirk, and Rough and Ready.
