The sleepy streets of Wonga Beach were the scene of a dramatic police and army rescue mission for almost six hours yesterday afternoon. Local authorities and Cairns experts worked together to safely negotiate with a resident experiencing mental health issues.
Nearby residents report that the northern end of Marlin Drive was closed to traffic and pedestrians from around 1.30 pm. The situation developed through until 7.30 pm with a dramatic influx of emergency experts including police, negotiators, fire, ambulance and four vehicles of armed defence force personnel.
It is understood that the situation ended calmly and safely shortly afterwards, with the resident in concern taken into appropriate medical care.
