Weekend Event Guide | Friday 24 June-Sunday 26 June 2022

School holidays kick off this weekend, and it’s hard to imagine the area possibly any busier than it already is. This weekend, the Laura Races and Rodeo is luring a few thousands locals away for what promises to be a huge event. There are markets up in Yungaburra tomorrow and at The Tanks on Sunday, as well as the regular Mossman and Port Douglas markets.

The Reef Eye Ferris Wheel opens today, from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week, beside the Lagoon on the Cairns Esplanade.

What is the weather doing?

A high [1025 hPa] moving eastward across New South Wales extends a firm ridge over northern waters. A new high will move into the Great Australian Bight over the weekend, maintaining the ridge, with strong wind warnings issued for both today and tomorrow. Partly cloudy and cool all weekend.

FREEDOM OF ENTRY CEREMONY / The granting of theΒ Freedom of Entry to the City, represents the highest civil honour that a city can bestow on a military unit. TheΒ Freedom of Entry dates back to medieval times when armed groups, including troops would request access to communities for food and shelter, in return for protecting the residents. It is a symbolic honour, demonstrating trust, loyalty and sense of community between the city and the military unit.

On Saturday 25 June the formal ceremonial event will take place in Cairns fromΒ 8:30-9:30am.

Personnel fromΒ HMAS CairnsΒ will march with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating, colours flying with theΒ Australian Navy Band playing.

The march will move from Lagoon Plaza up Shields Street, turning into Abbott Street through to the intersection of Aplin Street near the Cairns City Library as the Challenge Point for the formal ceremony, before continuing to Florence street and back down the Esplanade.

It also includes:

  • a challenge by the Assistant Police Commissioner
  • ceremonial scroll proclamation presented to the Cairns Mayor to grant approval
  • a Welcome to Country by the Traditional Owners
  • the parade then march unfettered through the streets, passing the Esplanade cenotaph back to the Lagoon.

Come on down andΒ line the streets to witness this important symbolic march and ceremony and show your support.
