CAIRNS FEST / All weekend. A celebration of arts and culture in the tropics. Over ten days of local and world-class national music, theatre, art, film and comedy are on show. Every day of the Cairns Festival, there is live music and exhibitions at Festival HQ, which is located at The Court House, as well as two extravaganza events that light up the Cairns City Library and the Cairns Esplanade.

JULIAN JAMES supported by KIRSTY BURCHILL / Mossman Shire Hall presented by Lynda’s Music, 7-9pm. Julian James has been around Melbourne’s live music scene since before he was allowed to drink in bars. The sound of his band ‘Julian James and The Moonshine State’ mixes a love of moonshine-drinking finger picking country with the southern swamp wail of a back porch fiddle. Julian has released three well-received albums to date, all of which he’s road tested on frequent laps of our wide brown land. Tickets and further details.

What is the weather doing?

A high [1034 hPa] in the Great Australian Bight will move slowly eastwards over coming days, maintaining a firm ridge across North Queensland Waters. A trough over the northern Coral Sea may approach the North Tropical Coast over the weekend, with winds increasing 15-25 knots.
