Despite the Melbourne lockdown being likely to be extended for at least another seven days, there is great news from the UK today, no COVID-related deaths have been reported in the UK in the last 24 hours.

The fall in COVID-19 cases correlates with the United States’ successful vaccination campaign where over 50% of the population have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 9.25% have had both doses.

“We are looking at giving 1,000 [Qantas] points, flight vouchers, credits and we are going to offer ten mega prizes — at least one for each State and territory.”

The significant chance that an infected person has recently travelled from Victoria to Douglas Shire means that the risk of a coronavirus outbreak here is the highest it has been for months.

The Victorian outbreak has reminded Queenslanders of the need to get vaccinated.

The current COVID outbreak in Melbourne is a wake-up call for Australia; until we have a high levels of vaccination coverage, Australia remains vulnerable to outbreaks, with lockdowns and border closures.

A dedicated motorhome fitted out with specialised equipment for vaccinating up to 150 people per day will be visiting the Douglas Shire from next week onwards.

Due to the perceived current low risk, and combined with our impossibly slow vaccine rollout, unfortunately many Australians have developed a “she’ll be right, mate” attitude towards COVID-19, and see no hurry to be vaccinated. This is unwise. 

Queenslanders will be able to hold unlimited private gatherings outdoors as authorities ease a raft of restrictions tomorrow.
