Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr has dismissed the no-confidence motion passed by the latest council meeting by a 3-2 vote at as having “no legal status” and that it would have “no effect on the future operation of the council”.
“While the purchase price is significantly higher than the independent valuation of about $800,000, Councillors and I decided we were not willing to sacrifice the livelihoods of local business owners and residents.”

In unison, all four Councillors criticised aspects of the Daintree ferry debacle that Mayor Kerr has brought about. At Douglas Shire Council’s Ordinary Meeting held on December 15, 2020, the two-ferry or bridge question should have been finalised. It appears, however, that the Mayor is still trying to avoid having the contract signed, by instigating a questionable last minute change to the meeting recommendation, and further, not advising all fellow Councillors of his intention to do so.
Despite the promise of consultation and transparency when he ran for office, the Mayor continues to operate in back rooms behind a wall of secrecy.
