Weekly Shutdowns for Daintree Ferry Maintenance

Douglas Shire Council will be undertaking overnight maintenance work on the Daintree Ferry from 11pm for the next two Thursday nights.  The scheduled work, which will involve minor repairs to the ferry loading ramps, will occur on the following dates: 

  • Thursday 26 August 2021
  • Thursday 2 September 2021 
  • Thursday 9 September 2021 

 The ferry will continue to operate until midnight, but there may be minor delays [less than 15 minutes] during the work period. Further overnight maintenance is anticipated in the future but we will keep the community informed of any plans. 

Lion’s Den & Ellis Beach Bar & Grill Up for Grabs

Ellis Beach Oceanfront Bungalows Holiday Park and Ellis Beach Bar and Grill are currently listed for sale with expressions of interest open until September 9.

Located on the waterfront, 28km north of Cairns CBD, the 9.7 ha property is under perpetual lease and includes bungalows, apartments, caravan and campsites. There are also current approvals for a 221-key resort development including a hotel, motel and apartment accommodation.

Further north, the ever popular Lion’s Den Hotel, “probably the most iconic pub in the country”, has also just been listed for sale for the first time since 2015.

The pub is located on a seven acre property in Rossville and includes camping areas and a caravan park along the Annan River.

Locally, the recently re-opened (and closed) Beach Shack in Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas has also hit the market with the current owner looking to pass the new look business onto new owner.

TARGA Great Barrier Reef Hits the Streets!

TARGA GBR returns to the Tropical North next weekend, from 2-5 September.

Locals can enjoy an amazing curation of $12 million worth of high performance machinery at the opening TARGA Cavalcade in Cairns.

The route takes a wide sweep of northern Cairns, with stars and cars, under police escort, touring Aeroglen, Stratford, Freshwater, Kamerunga, Redlynch before concluding at Brinsmead.

The Cavalcade is scheduled from 3.30pm-4.45pm on the afternoon of Friday 3 September.

PORT SHORTS Goes Worldwide, Screening Virtually for 2021

Given the present uncertainty surrounding COVID, the Port Shorts Crew have made the difficult decision to cancel their outdoor screening as part of this year’s festival, which was scheduled to run Friday 15 – Saturday 16 October in Rex Smeal Park.

The crew are now 100% focussed on delivering an extraordinary Virtual Event, bringing viewers the best short films from our own backyard and around the world.

Screened to an even wider audience, offered to everyone, free of charge, everywhere!

The Virtual Event (15-23 October) will be a great way to stay engaged with cinema from around the globe, and just by tuning in, you’ll be helping to support filmmakers and enable Port Shorts to continue into future years.
