Douglas Shire cane growers have just received news announcing the appointment of a voluntary administrator  for the Mossman Sugar Mill. Despite record high global sugar prices, supply challenges and adverse weather conditions are being blamed for interrupting the Mill’s ability to operate viably.

Today, Rabobank provides us with local and global insights on 2021 expectations for the sugar sector. A global sugar deficit of 0.3 million metric tonnes raw value (mtrv) is being projected for 2020/21 in Rabobank’s latest Global Sugar Quarterly report.

An alternative ingredient for speciality soy sauce will provide a boost for Far North Queensland sugar cane farmers when a Mossman food processing facility commences operations next to the Mossman Sugar Mill.

Management is confident that the Mill is now, and will remain, fully operational for the 2020 crush.

Mossman Mill installed Boiler Water Level Controls during the off season but the upgrade has caused some teething issues at the beginning of the season. After more modifications and inspections overnight, the boilers were fired up this morning at 5.30 am and today’s crush is well underway with bins busily rolling in to the Mill.
